Richard has taken part in the event 5 times previously, each time in order to support a different charity. This year Richard supported Sheffield Hospitals Charity, raising money for its helipad appeal, and he has far surpassed his target of £100, with over £240 already collected.

Often called the best running event in the world, the GNR attracted over 50,000 runners this year. Richard was delighted with his finishing time of 1 hour and 40 minutes – especially considering the rather warm conditions, which made the run more challenging than usual.

Richard says, “I survived the race on the numerous ice pops that were kindly provided by the people watching. The enthusiastic support from Sheffield locals, presumably recognising the charity’s name on my shirt, also helped push me along. I really wanted to give something back to this charity after all the work it does to help keep us healthy, and that I think most of us take for granted! It was a fantastic event, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking part. I was, however, very pleased to see the finishing line and enjoy the beer at the end of the race.”

That looks like it for Richard for a little while. No more competitions in the pipeline this year, but you will probably still see him running in Sheffield on a Sunday morning. Sunday morning lie-ins, he says, are a distant memory since his little boy was born last year!
